"What is Prairie Style?"
Prairie Style home plans take their aspects from the Arts and Crafts Movement of the 19th century in England yet incorporates the Midwestern American elements of prairie lifestyle. The long straight lines and low roofs are designed to mimic the vast smooth expanse of the American Midwest landscape. These homes are constructed to look like they have grown from the soil and are a part of the natural beauty of the American plains that are symbolic of this lifestyle. Prairie Style house plans are the perfect homes for people looking for their first starter house, as a vacation home, or as a permanent home for couples with small families. Homes normally have 3 to 4 bedrooms along with 2 to 3 1/2 baths. The roof design is often the most identifiable characteristic which include sheltering cottage roof forms with large overhangs. Many of the home plans featured ornate stained glass casement windows, decorative lighting screens, and custom rugs and cabinetry. Prairie house plans are often categorized as a two storied house plan but can also have a one story footprint.
